Description |
A men's coat, part of a suit set (1991.188.004a-c). The single-breasted, black wool coat is lined with black cotton, and the sleeves are lined with white stripped cotton. The coat has a simple, peaked lapel and collar. There are three buttons that run vertically on the chest. All of the buttons are covered in brown checked satin. There is a slit at the back center towards the bottom. Two additional buttons are sewn at the top of the slit. There are interior breast pockets on both the left and the right. |

This coat was worn by the donor's grandfather, Hans Madsen, on his golden wedding anniversary in 1937. The museum collection also contains the outfit (1991.188.005a-b) worn by Johanna Madsen, Hans' wife, at their golden anniversary. The museum's collection has a photograph (1991.188.003) of the donor's grandparents at their Golden Wedding Anniversary. In the photograph, they are wearing the clothing in this gift lot. The donor's grandparents, Hans and Johanna Ebbesen Madsen, were Danish immigrants. They were married in 1887 and celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1937. They both lived in Kimballton, Iowa. Hans Madsen was the founder of Landmands National Bank in Kimballton. |
