Description |
U.S. Army jacket. Part of Hans Nicolaj Edward Koefoed's WWI uniform (1988.059.001a-j and 1988.082.001). Army-issue dark green-brown wool jacket. Roughly hip length. Has half collar, which does not fold down. Collar has two holes for insertion of insignia, but no insignia. Each shoulder has one shoulder strap, which is secured by one small round metal button. There are two pockets at the chest and two at the hips, one on either side for both. Each pocket is secured with a small round metal button. Five larger round metal buttons down the center to close the opening of the coat. All of these buttons have the seal of the United States (A bald eagle with its wings outspread, bearing a shield with an olive branch and arrows gripped in its talons and 13 stars arranged above its head.) Three eye-and-hook closures to further secure the proper front opening. Two of the hook-and-eye closures are located at the throat and the other closure is located towards the bottom. Jacket has insignia on both arms. All insignia has been stitched on by hand. On the proper left arm, towards the wrist there is one green-gold chevron, which points down. At the upper arm, there is a red chevron pointing up. Both chevrons are outlined with green fabric. Towards the shoulder, there is an olive green square patch with a black water jug called an olla. Within the black olla shape, there is the number "34" between the horn of a steer skull, followed by the words: SANDSTORM DIVISION", all in red. On the proper right arm, at the upper arm, there are two gold-green chevrons pointing up. Below the chevrons, there is a green-brown circle sewn on top of a larger red circle. Stitched into the green-brown circle are the letters "MP", which likely stands for military police. This is pinned to the jacket with a straight pin. Hook for hanging at proper back interior of collar. Jacket lining is a dark green-brown fabric. |

Provenance |
This World War I uniform belonged to donor Myrtle Felkner's father, Hans Nicolaj Edward Koefoed. The insignia on the proper left arm of the uniform is as follows: The green-gold chevron towards the proper left wrist is an Overseas Service Chevron, and it represents six months of service. The red chevron is an Honorable Discharge Chevron. The square patch with the red steer skull indicates Hans' division, the 34th Infantry Division, which trained at Camp Cody, New Mexico. The insignia on the proper right sleeve is as follows: The two chevrons on the proper right sleeve indicate Hans' grade or rank of corporal. The circular patch with "MP" below the chevrons likely stands for military police. Hans Nicolaj Edward Koefoed served on the Mexican border right before WWI.
