Provenance |
The jacket is part of a suit that belonged to the donor's father, Rev. Anders Hansen. Debbie Jacobsen, the donor's daughter, was originally credited with the donation, but she asked that it be attributed to Virgil so new paperwork was sent to him. Anders Hansen was born in 1886 in Randers, Denmark, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1904. His uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Jensen, had returned to Denmark for a visit, and he came to the U.S. with them at the conclusion of that visit. He settled in Bowbells, North Dakota originally. He married Martha Rasmussen of Audubon, Iowa in September of 1914. They had six children--Naomi, Leland, Allan, Vera, Virgil (the donor), and Alice. Two daughters passed away in childhood--Naomi at age 8 in 1923, and Vera at age 13 in 1939. Anders attended school at Valley City Normal at Valley City, North Dakota, and at Augsburg College, Dana College Trinity Seminary, and then graduated from Maywood Seminary in Maywood, Illinois in 1914. Anders was ordained into the ministry in June of 1914 in Greenville, Michigan, and married Martha in September of that year. He first served parishes in Octonto and Maple Valley, WI before starting the congregation in Green Bay. He moved to Luck, WI in 1918, to Ruskin NE in 1926, and to Elk Horn, IA in 1931. It was while he was Pastor of Elk Horn Lutheran Church that he started the work of Salem Lutheran Homes, which he continued until his death in 1955. In addition to his duties as Pastor, he served as Superintendent of Salem Homes from 1933 until 1955. In 1947, he resigned as Pastor in Elk Horn. He served the Hamlin Lutheran Church on a part time basis from 1947 until 1955. He died in 1955 in Elk Horn, Iowa. |
