Provenance |
Dolls were passed down to the donor from his mother, Jenny Sorensen. She made these both for practical purposes and to make money to return to Denmark for a visit. She visited in 1947. She always called these dolls and others like them "Jenny dolls". Jenny was born in Sørbymagle, Sjaelland in 1891, but soon moved with her family to Copenhagen, where she lived until she immigrated alone to the U.S. in 1914. She settled in Chicago and lived with her brother. She took work at a bakery on North Avenue. She met Karl Sorensen at a dance hosted by the Danish American Athletic Club, and they later married. Jenny was also a leading actress in the Chicago Danish language theater. Kar was the set designer and made the scenery. |
