Sheet. One in a pair; its mate is 1993.005.046. Sheet is composed of two long panels of off-white handwoven linen, each approximately 26 inches wide, that have been sewn together. The proper right upper corner has the name "Bertine Jenfen" [Jensen] embroidered in red cross-stitch. |

The two matching sheets and set of four matching pillowcases (1993.005.039, 1993.005.040, 1993.005.042, and 1993.005.043) were all made by Bertine Jensen's grandmother. Her grandmother made them at the time of Bertine's birth (1877) for Bertine's future trousseau. Flax was grown and harvested by Bertine Jensen's grandfather. Then the flax was made into thread and eventually spun into these linen sheets. The museum's collection also contains a bedding set that Bertine Jensen made in 1904 for her trousseau. Bertine brought both of these bedding sets, as well as two heirloom folk costumes, when she immigrated to the United States in 1906. Bertine Jensen (later Bertine Jensen Norregaard) was born in 1877. Bertine met her future husband, Jacob Norregaard, in 1903-1904, when they were both teaching gymnastics and folk dancing at folk schools in Denmark. They became engaged, and Jacob sailed from Bremerhavn to Tyler, Minnesota in 1905. Bertine emigrated shortly thereafter, and the two were married in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 10 November 1906. Bertine died in 1973. |
