Description |
This is the proper left shoe in a pair of women's shoes. Its mate is 1986.115.003a. The leather shoe is golden brown in color, with a two-inch dark brown heel. A flap with a slightly scalloped edge would be fastened in place by three dark orange buttons on the proper left side of the shoe. This shoe, unlike its mate, is not buttoned. The seam near the rounded toe is decorated with perforated holes. On the proper left side, the leather near the opening for the foot is a slightly darker shade of golden brown than the rest of the leather. The interior of the shoe is lined with brown suede and white fabric. There is a maker's mark with silver printing on the leather insole. The mark appears to be based on a cinched belt. The top part of the belt shape reads "HAMILTON-BROWN" and the bottom part of the belt shape reads "SHOE CO." To the viewer's left of the word shoe, there is a shape like a buckle, and between the words "SHOE" and "CO." there is another shape, like a fish tail cut ribbon. Within the circle of the belt are the word "American Lady / SPECIAL". The phrase "American Lady" is written in cursive script; the rest of the words are printed in block lettering. The sole of the shoe is two-toned. The colors are delineated by an inverted v-shape. To the proper front of the arch, the sole is a light brown color. To the proper back of the arch, the sole is a dark brown. There is a makers mark on the sole, above the inverted v-shape. The mark appears to be based on a cinched belt. The top part of the belt shape reads "HAMILTON, BROWN" and the bottom part of the belt shape reads "SHOE CO." To the viewer's left of the word shoe, there is a shape like a buckle, and between the words "SHOE" and "CO." there is another shape, like a fish tail cut ribbon. Within the circle of the belt is the word "MAKERS". A small circle is imprinted near the toe. A black sticker with the numbers "2020" in gold is attached to the proper front of the heel. The proper front edge of the heel near the sole is beveled. |

Provenance |
According to a letter from the donor, her husband's parents, Bill and Bernice Laustsen, assumed ownership of these shoes, along with 20 other pairs of shoes, during a visit to Elk Horn. Apparently, the shoes had been stored for years in the attic of the J.P. Nielsen's Mercantile, and the attic was being cleaned out and the shoes were going to be thrown away. The donor believed the shoes were likely from the early 1900s. Two sets of shoelaces were included in the gift lot. The donor's husband, Russell "Rusty" Laustsen, used to live in Elk Horn on Union Street. His father, William Laustsen, was known as "Bill the Buttermaker." The family moved the West Coast in 1939, when Rusty was 14 years old. |
