Description |
Cast iron drill attached to a wooen board. The drill is black in color and heavy. There is a center frame on which several cogs attach, and a large wheel on one side. A black wooden turned handle attaches to this. On the opposite side is a crank with a brown wooden turned handle. At one end of the main body is the drill portion with a fixed round plate in front of it. On the outside of the crank near the big wheel end, on the opposite side as the wheel, is in raised letters: "102-3". On the same side on the main body is: "CHAMPION BLOWER / & FORCE CO" and "LANCASTER PA / U.S.A." Also on the frame is "103". The wood base was originally attached to a long 1 x 6 board, about 6 feet long. It was detached when the drill was brought from Exira back to the museum as it did not appear to be original. |

Provenance |
This drill belonged to J. Fred Bonnesen who had a blacksmith shop in Hamlin, Iowa from 1905-1909, and a shop in Kimballton, Iowa from 1910-1914. He trained in Denmark and Germany as a youth, receiving his Master Blacksmith Certificate there. He immigrated to America in 1898. From volunteer Dick Nelson on 10/5/2011: "J. Fred Bonnesen's father was the donor's father. He had a shop on his farm. The drill would be mounted upright and used for drilling metal. Drill bits ranged from 1/4" thick to 1" thick. You would pour water over it to keep it cool. Sometimes, you used an oil can full of water to pour over it." |
