Description |
Part of folk costume. This vest is royal blue velvet with trim and other decoration. It has two straps, one over each shoulder, and on each strap is a strip of the same trim that is on the bonnet (with the black background and red, green, and white flower and leaf detail). Two red pieces of thin trim edge the straps, one on either side of the flowered trim. The same flowered trim is on the top and bottom edge of the vest. There are six decorative buttons on either side of the open area in front. The top buttons are larger than the rest, but they all have the same black and gold floral design made from bead and wire. The outer part of the buttons are highly reflective. Next to each button are small metal eye fasteners, and the long thin red ribbon laces up through these small loops. The interior is lined with a light blue fabric. The vest is reinforced with seven stays inside--one stay behind each row of buttons, two stays up each side, and one up the proper center of the back. |

Provenance |
The costume was made by Arta Christiansen in Junction City, Oregon around 1948. Arta was born in Lexington, Nebraska, and settled in Cozad, Nebraska. Minnie Jensen Pedersen was her mother. Minnie made the J.C. Jensen quilt in our collection (object number 2002.078.001). Jen C. Jensen was Arta's grandfather. Arta was a housewife, born May 8, 1905. She married a Danish American named Ejner Christiansen, who was born in Newall, Iowa (both of his parents were immigrants). Arta died July 25, 2005. She used the costume at the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City, Oregon. The donor is her son. |
