Description |
Rug. Diamond shape. Proper front surface covered with small, multicolored circles of felt which are ringed in black felt and contrast against a nude background. The circles are largely red, blue, yellow, green or beige in color. The outer border of circles are on teardrop-shaped pieces of black felt. The teardrop shapes point outwards, giving the rug a spiky appearance. The backing is an old ingrain carpet. The carpet is mostly brown and cream in color and has a pattern of feathers and swirls. Border around ingrain carpet is the same nude fabric on proper front. |

This rug belonged to Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen. Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen. She died at the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 10 months, and 12 days. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-day Adventist Church near Exira. |
