Description |
1923 church gathering badge made of metal and silk ribbon. Top part of badge has a decorative metal plate with flowers engraved at four corners. Upper and lower portion of metal plate each has a horizontal slit with a rectangular piece of paper slotted in the center. Paper has penciled writing of "S.P. - Tyler / Minn". An extension bar is located at bottom edge of metal plate. Soldered to backside of metal plate is a metal pin and clasp mechanism. A white silk ribbon is attached to the bar by white thread in a hem stitch. Front of ribbon has red printing of words "Den / Danske / Ev.-Luth. / Kirkes / 46. / Aarsmøde / - / 5.-10. Juni / 1923 / - / Cedar Falls, IA." Two long sides of ribbon are selvage. Top of ribbon's backside has the name "Sigurd Pedersen" written in ink. |

This badge was likely used by Sigurd Pedersen. The materials in this donation document the life and work of Svend Sigurd Pedersen, the donor's father. He was born November 24, 1878 in Gowen, Michigan, and later married Edyth Eveline Larson on June 7, 1917 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sigurd wrote for several Danish American newspapers throughout Minnesota, and served as editor of the Tyler Journal. He also taught from 1905 to 1906 at Ruthton, Minnesota. He died January 3, 1969, in Ruthton, and is buried in Danebod Cemetery, Tyler, Minnesota. Sigurd's father, Hans Jorgen Pedersen, played a key role in establishing the Danebod and Ashland folk schools. Sigurd's mother, and Hans' wife, was Ane Marie Jepsen (Jeppesen) Pedersen. |
