Provenance |
This piece relates to T. G. Muller, prominent businessman in Kimballton, Iowa, and the donor's father-in-law through T.G.'s son Ove O. Muller. The menorah might have been a gift from a Jewish family in Denmark. The Mullers sent over 400 packages of food and clothing from their grocery store in Kimballton. For this effort, T.G. received the Medal of Freedom from the King of Denmark in 1949. Family History: Thorvald George Muller was born in Brostrup, Denmark on June 7, 1873. He came to the U.S. in 1884 at the age of 11 with his parents Jess and Johanne Muller, two brothers, and two sisters. The family originally farmed near Ord, Nebraska. In 1904, after starting to farm on his own, T.G. placed an ad in a Danish newspaper for a housekeeper. Mette Jensen Overgaard, from near Aarhus, answered the ad and came to Nebraska. The two were married September 30, 1904, in Kimballton, Iowa where T.G. had family, and then the couple returned to Nebraska for a few years before selling the farm and returning permanently to Kimballton. T.G. ran several businesses including a grocery store. T.G. died February 24, 1952, and Mette on June 19, 1968. |
