One in a pair of matching potholders (1988.147.023 and 1988.147.024). Red and white crocheted potholder in the shape of a heart. Resembles woven heart basket. Small red loop in center of the top of the heart. Edges of heart scalloped. |

No further information regarding this gift. ------------------------------------ Donor family history: Donor, Mildred Schroeder's mother, Johanne Marie Pedersen, was born in Vinding, Jutland, Denmark, in 1881. She was one of eight children. The family owned a small farm. Johanne's father, Soren Pedersen, was a mason, building homes and business establishments of field stone. Mildred's father, Soren Christian Thomsen, was born in 1873. He came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin about 1900. Four years later, he returned to Denmark for a visit, during which he met Johanne. The following year, she came to the United States. She worked in New Jersey as a domestic for a period of time before traveling to Milwaukee. She and Soren married in February of 1907. In 1909, Johanne visited Denmark with her one-and-a-half-year-old son named Milton. When Johanne returned to the United States, she brought back her youngest sister, Karn. Johanne and Soren lived in Milwaukee the rest of their lives. Soren died at the age of 58 in 1932, and Johanne at the age of 97 in 1978. |
