Description |
The tray fits into a wooden traveling trunk. It is a three inch tall removable rectangular tray that is divided in half at center. It has a cover that connects to the tray front with three leather loops and buttons. When in place, it creates an area for large storage in the remaining trunk bottom. The fabric of the tray depicts a brown basket weave pattern. |

The trunk belonged to Andreas Karstensen. He used it when he immigrated to the U.S. in 1892. He used the trunk again when he returned to Denmark for a visit in 1914. Andreas Karstensen was born 3 April 1868 at Otis, near Kolding, Denmark. Nicoline (née Juel) Karstensen was born 23 January 1871 in Slesvigs, Denmark. In 1892, Andreas and Nicoline immigrated to the U.S. They married on 14 February 1893. The couple settled in Atlantic, Iowa. Andreas was a farmer in the U.S., but had studied law and served in the army in Denmark. Andreas died in 1939, and Nicoline died in 1940. |
