Description |
Reproduced black and white map, with color accents, of Denmark that represents the country ca. 1626. The map shows regions of the Danish country as well as sections of Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Towns, bodies of water, and islands are also labeled across the map. Brown, yellow, green, and pink tones line the borders of the defined areas. An orange colored compass rose is to the viewer's left of the map, in the ocean. Sailing ships are above and below this icon. The title is along the top of the map, to the viewer's right. It reads, "THE KINGDOME/OF/DENMARKE/augmented by John Speede and are to be/sold in pops bend Alley by G. Humble./1626." A scale showing "Coman. German miles" is in the viewer's lower right corner. Latitude and longitude lines cover the map. A decorative border surrounds the map. Along the vertical edges are colored depictions of traditional male and female clothing bases on occupation. An image of King Christian the IV is in the viewer's upper left corner and an image of his son is in the viewer's right corner. Between these two images are depictions of six Danish cities with the Royal Coat of Arms at center. The map is under a white framer's mat and housed under glass in a thin wood frame. The top face of the frame is painted gold and the perimeters are black. There are labels on the reverse side of the frame which share the family's history. See Notes & Legal section for the transcription of these labels. |
