Description |
A first prize button from Audubon County Fair in Iowa. The button portion of the prize ribbon is circular with off-white and blue colors. The outer edge of the button is blue with white print along the top then bottom that reads "AUDUBON CO. FAIR / AUDUBON, IA." The center of the circle is white with blue print that reads "FIRST PREMIUM." A pin and latch are seen on the back of the button, allowing the object to be worn securely to clothing. A blue ribbon is attached to the back and hangs down. In addition, two blue pieced of thread also are seen hanging from the back for added decoration. |

This is a first prize ribbon awarded at the Audubon County Fair in Iowa. The award was received for a pair of crocheted booties. The button most likely belonged to the donor. ----------------------------------------------------- Donor History: Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen. She was born in Audubon County, Iowa on 15 December 1888 and died on 27 October 1984 in the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira, Iowa, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-Day Adventist Church near Exira. |
