Description |
Sewing bag. Off-white in color and almost square in shape. Exterior appears to be made from aida cloth, and the interior is lined with white fabric. Handstitched. Proper front and proper back surfaces of the main body of the bag are decorated with two vertical columns of diamond shapes in white cross stitch. The design is subtle next to the texture of the aida cloth. Bag has a flap that folds down over the opening. This flap has what appear to be two cross stitched initials in one corner; however, the thread used is so pale that the initials are illegible. There is a pearly white button positioned to secure the flap, but no corresponding buttonhole in the flap. |

This handmade sewing bag belonged to the donor Ellen Nielsen's mother, Signe Jørgensen. Donor dated it to circa 1880. Signe brought this sewing bag with her when she immigrated to the U.S. in 1929. Signe immigrated to the U.S. to be with her only living child, Ellen. They first lived in Little Valley, New York, and later moved to the towns of Estherville and Ringsted, Iowa. Signe had been a widow since her husband's death in 1912. Signe Jørgensen died in March 27, 1957. Donor Ellen Nielsen was the daughter of Hans and Signe Jørgensen. The family home was called Skodborghus, in Vejen, Jylland, Denmark. Ellen married another Danish immigrant, William Tronborg Nielsen. William was born in Hoven, Jylland. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1924. Ellen Nielsen immigrated to the U.S. in 1926. The date of Ellen and William's wedding is unknown. |
