Provenance |
The donor's mother, Johanne Marie (Pedersen) Thomsen, brought two tablecloths (1988.147.033 and .034), over from Denmark when she immigrated in 1905. Johanne Marie (Pedersen) Thomsen was born in Vinding, Jutland, Denmark, in 1881. She was one of eight children. The family owned a small farm. Johanne's father, Soren Pedersen, was a mason, building homes and business establishments of field stone. Johanne Marie's husband, Soren Christian Thomsen, was born in 1873. He came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin about 1900. Four years later, he returned to Denmark for a visit, during which he met Johanne. The following year, she came to the United States. She worked in New Jersey as a domestic for a period of time before traveling to Milwaukee. She and Soren married in February of 1907. In 1909, Johanne visited Denmark with her one-and-a-half year-old son named Milton. When Johanne returned to the United States, she brought back her youngest sister, Karn. Johanne and Soren lived in Milwaukee the rest of their lives. Soren died at the age of 58 in 1932, and Johanne at the age of 97 in 1978. |
