Description |
White house coat. Long sleeved, waist length coat with a short collar. The collar is 1" including the tatted trim at the top edge. That same trim is along the ends of each arm and down both sides of the buttons in front. There are eight white round buttons that close the coat at the front center, all but the next to last/bottom one match. Those seven have small dashes cut into them as decoration--the seventh button down has a smooth surface. Coat is otherwise without decoration or detail. It is a fairly straight coat, not fitted. Appears to be homemade. |

Provenance |
The house coat belonged to the donor's grandmother, Jacobina Rasmussen Petersen (b. Nov. 30, 1849; died Jan. 10, 1932). Jacobina immigrated to the United States from Lolland, Denmark. She arrived in Quebec first, amking her way to the United States on May 23, 1881. She settled in Neenah, WI and married Frederick Nielsen Peterson on April 20, 1885. The donor's mother, Nora Peterson, was born in Neenah in 1888. Eleanor, the donor, was born in 1921. Both Nora and Eleanor were subsequent owners of this jacket. The piece had been used by Jacobina in the home--it was apparently not used for outings. Jacobina was born in Laaland, Denmark to Rasmus Anderson and Ane Dorte Jacobsdatter Anderson. Frederick Nielsen Peterson was born March 29, 1858 in Rudkjobing, Langeland, Denmark. His parents were Peder Hanson and Ingeborg Jensen Hanson. Frederick immigrated in 1882 through New York and settled in Neenah, WI. he died Jan. 25, 1905. (Frederick had been married in 1877 to a woman in Denmark. No note as to whether she died or what happened.) Further family information is on file at GC. |
