Description |
Off-white crocheted bedspread. Has repeating diamond patterns throughout. The edges (excluding the top edge and edges at the bottom corners) are slightly scalloped. The two bottom corners are squared inward so that when it's on the bed, the two sides hang down flush with each other and don't fold over and make a point like most bedspreads. This suggests the bedspread may have been made for a corner post bed. Near the bottom center is a large design of a male peacock displaying his feathers within a floral ring. Near the top center there is a small, halo-shaped floral design. There are smaller oval designs, which apppear to be the "eyes" of peacock feathers, repeating along the long sides and bottom edge of the bedspread. |

Provenance |
This double bedspread was a gift to the donor from her paternal grandmother, Anna Marie Nelsen (sometimes spelled Nelson) Hanson. Anna made bedspreads for some of her granddaughters--she made this one in the 1940s. The donor used this bedspread for only a few months. Anna was born in Shelby County, Iowa, on 4 May 1877 to Lars Nelsen and Egidia Hedvig Pedersen. She married Erik Frederick Hansen, an immigrant from Ærøskøbing, Ærø, Denmark, in April of 1897. They lived in Brayton, Iowa, for five years before moving to Elk Horn, Iowa. Erik owned the butcher shop on Main Street in Elk Horn. They had 11 children. Erik passed away in 1945 and Anna passed away in 1952. Both are buried in Clay Hill Cemetery. Erik and Anna once lived in the house that is now Bedstemor's House, a small house museum in Elk Horn that is operated by the Danish Immigrant Museum. |
