Provenance |
Valdemar Hojbjerg (Hoiberg) was born September 24, 1881 in Idom, Denmark, the son of Iver Hansen Hojbjerg and Hansine Elisabeth Sersted Hojbjerg. Valdemar immigrated to the U.S. in 1905 and it is not known where he first settled before coming to Askov, Minnesota. On September 24, 1914, in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Askov, he married Dagmar Cecillia Buck, daughter of Anders Rasmussen Buck and Andrea Alfreda Bertelsen Buck. Valdemar was known simply as "Hoiberg" and he worked at several trades. He was a partner in the Askov Mercantile Company together with Dagmar's brother, Holger Buck. His draft card lists his occupation as assistant cashier in the First State Bank of Askov. At some time in the 1920s, Valdemar operated a creamery, a trade he had learned in Denmark. In the 1930s, they decided to build and operate a tourist camp in Madison, Wisconsin. It consisted of several individual cabins which Dagmar's brother, Evald Buck, helped build. It was open six months of the year, after which Valdemar and Dagmar would spend the winter months California. After experiencing the great earthquake of 1933, they gave up CA and started wintering in St. Petersburg, FL. On May 3, 1944, Valdemar died, after which Dagmar sold the tourist camp and moved permanently to St. Petersburg, FL. Dagmar died on November 10, 1982 at the age of 93. Both Valdemar and Dagmar are buried in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Askov, MN. Valdemar's brother, Rev. Carl Peter Hojbjerg (Hoiberg), also immigrated to the U.S. and served as the fifth president of Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa. Donated to museum Sandra Boeskov, the great niece of Valdemar. |
