Provenance |
This folk costume belonged to the donor's father, Carl K. Larsen. Carl was an active member of the Danish community in Askov, Minnesota. He even met his wife, Sigrid Jensen, through folk dancing. She was the instructor of his Folk Dance group. The museum's collection also contains Sigrid Jensen Larsen's folk costume (2003.059.012.001-.005a,b). Carl K. Larsen was the eldest son of Danish immigrants. His parents, Peder "Christian" Larsen and Mariane "Christine" Klitgaard, had immigrated to the United States in 1905 and originally settled in Omaha, Nebraska, where they joined Christian's brother Lars, his wife, and six children. Their first child, Carl, was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on 15 July, 1905. In March of 1912, Christian and Christine moved to Askov, Minnesota with their five sons and settled on a farm. Two daughters were born in Askov. Carl married Sigrid Jensen on 16 May 1937. Sigrid was the daughter of Danish immigrants Jens and Anne Jensen. She was born on 8 August 1901 in Newell, Iowa. In 1918, one year after the death of Jens, Sigrid moved with her family to another Danish community in Askov, Minnesota. Sigrid completed her high school education at Grand View College in Des Moines. Sigrid then returned to Askov, where she worked for the post office and Askov Telephone Company. Sigrid also taught Danish Folk Dancing and gymnastics. While teaching, she met Carl. Sigrid Jensen and Carl Larsen settled on a farm 2 miles west of Askov. They had two daughters, donor Helga J. (Larsen) Wallner and Ruth Mae (Larsen) Wagner. Carl was an active participant in the Askov business community. In 1940, Carl aided in organizing members for the North Pine Electric Cooperative and served on its board for 30 years. Sigrid passed away 3 October 1958 from cancer and was buried in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Askov, Minnesota. Carl died on 7 July 2002 in Duluth, Minnesota, where he had resided in a nursing home after being hit by a car in November 1997. |
