Provenance |
Donor Aveline Marks received this pillow as a gift from her paternal aunt, Agnes Petersen, in 1987. Agnes Petersen lived in Copenhagen, Denmark and was the only sister of Carl W. Nelson. Donor Aveline Marks is the only daughter of Danish immigrant Carl W. Nelson and Mamie A. Horak. Carl W. Nelson was born November 18, 1894 in Nykobing Falster, Denmark, to farmers Olaf and Emile Nielsson. Carl had two brothers, Valdemar and Einar, and one sister, Agnes. Carl immigrated alone in 1910. He served for the U.S. in WWI and worked in a hospital unit in France. That was where the trade of steamfitting began. After the war, he worked for different contractors such as York Ice Machine, J.J. Hannigan, Peter Kiewit & Sons, and Hawkins Construction. Some of the buildings he was involved with were Omaha City Auditorium, Burke High School, UNMC Library, Mead Missle Base, and several churches. He was active in the Shriners and Masons. He later died on July 18, 1983 in Omaha, Nebraska. |
