Jensen, Bertine Norregaard, Bertine Jensen folk costume skirt |
Provenance |
This skirt was made in 1890 to replace an old authentic folk costume skirt made by Ole Nielsen's wife of Odsherred, Sjælland. The ribbons used in this skirt are from the original 1790 folk costume. The vest to that costume (1993.005.049) and the ribbons used in bonnet 1993.005.051 also date back to 1790. The museum's collection also contains authentic men's folk costume pieces (cap 1993.005.055 and striped vest 1993.005.052), which were made by Ole Nielsen's wife and worn by Ole in 1790. These family heirloom pieces (the two vests, the red cap and ribbons) were among the many items brought over to the U.S. in 1906 when Ole Nielsen's great-great granddaughter, Bertine (née Jensen) Norregaard, immigrated. Later, Bertine made the pants in the man's folk costume (1993.005.053). They are a copy of Ole Nielsen's original pants and were made circa 1930. Bertine and her husband, Jacob, wore these folk costumes at the World's Fair in 1939 and 1940, as part of the opening events of the Danish Pavillion on Scandinavian Day. Bertine and Jacob led a troupe of 100 couples from Hartford, Bridgeport, New York and New Jersey. Bertine met her future husband, Jacob Norregaard, in 1903-1904, when they were both teaching gymnastics and folk dancing at folk schools in Denmark. They became engaged, and Jacob sailed from Bremerhavn to Tyler, Minnesota in 1905. Bertine immigrated shortly thereafter, and the two were married in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 10 November 1906. The donor is their daughter. |
