Provenance |
This baptismal gown belonged to the donor, Elsie H. Swansen, daughter of Valdemar (Walter) and Katherine Elisabeth Madsen. Her mother, Katherine, made the dress in 1914 for her baptism. Elsie was born in Kimballton, Iowa on November 2, 1913. She was delivered by Dr. P. Soe. Elsie was baptized in this gown on February 22, 1914 by Reverend J. Jorgensen at the Lutheran church in Kimballton. The baptismal gown (1998.034.002) of Elsie's sister, Lorraine Elizabeth Madsen, is also in this gift. -------------------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY HISTORY: Valdemar (Walter) Madsen was born on may 5, 1887 in Farre, Denmark. He immigrated to the United States in 1911. He married Katherine Elisabeth Christiansen Dein on December 24, 1912. Katherine Elisabeth Christiansen Dein was born in Phillips County, Nebraska on May 31, 1887. Her mother, Hedrig Katherine Dein, died when she was a few years of age. Her father, Andrew Christiansen Dein, was a Nebraska pioneer at the time. Katherine was adopted for a time by friends. Her father eventually remarried, and they settled in Irvington, Nebraska. Valdemar and Katherine had two daughters: Elsie and Lorraine. Valdemar owned several clothing and tailoring shops throughout his lifetime including locations in Omaha, Nebraska, Kimballton and Elk Horn, Iowa and Kenosha, Wisconsin. The store in Elk Horn was robbed in 1922 while the sheriff, too scared to act, watched the crime. After the crime, the family moved to Denmark for a year. They later returned in 1923 and settled in Kenosha, Wisconsin where they were active in the community. |
