Description |
Large white and gold quilt. Hand quilted with white thread. The outer border of the quilt is gold and quilted with a geometric pattern of alternating joined diamond and circle shapes. The interior border is white and quilted with a geometric pattern of joined circles. Inside the borders, there are 34 gold blocks and 34 white blocks, all of the same size. At the center, there is a larger white block with gold embroidery of a church image and a Bible verse below: "Matt. 1:23-And they shall call His name Immanuel-God with us. / Church organized - Sept. 22, 1874." Each gold block has the same quilted design of two circles at the center with flower-like petals around the outside. Each white block has several names embroidered in gold thread (names of church members) and a quilted lattice design made from diagonal lines. White backing sandwiches a thin layer of batting. No batting towards outer edges. Two of the small white blocks contain the names of former pastors of the church and the dates they served. These and the other names of the congregation members are listed in the people and search terms sections of this record. The pastors with dates are below: Rev. H. Hansen 1874-1875 Rev. A.M. Andersen 1875-1876 Rev. H. Hansen 1877-1886 Rev. N.S. Nielsen 1887-1890 Rev. A.M. Andersen 1890-1895 Rev. Gudmund Grill 1895-1898 Rev. J.Th. Lund 1898-1906 Rev. C.C. Kloth 1906-1910 Rev. A. Th. Provenance |
The quilt was given to the donor's parents, Reverend Nels B. Hansen and Metta Hansen, by the ladies of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hampton, Nebraska in 1928. Nels began serving at a small country church, the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in 1924. It was his first congregation. When Nels and the family decided to leave Hampton in 1928, the ladies of the church conspired to make this quilt. (Each woman's name is on the quilt.) They held a raffle for this quilt, but in the end, the quilt was given to Nels and Metta, as was all the money from the raffle. Both were intended all along to be surprise gifts to the Hansens. In 1928, Nels and the family moved to Fremont, Nebraska, where Nels served three congregations, one congregation in town and two rural congregations. Nels served numerous churches throughout his career. The quilt was later given to their daughter, donor Lillian (née Hansen) Jensen, when Nels and Metta left the church in Hutchinson, Minnesota to go serve in Wisconsin. Lillian had been born in Hampton, Nebraska. Nels was born Dec. 27, 1894 in Lattimer, Iowa to Danish immigrant parents Peder and Marie (Mortensen) Hansen. The family homesteaded in Bowbells, North Dakota, and remained there for four years. They then moved to Kenmare, ND, where Nels spent his youth. He was baptised on Jan. 24, 1895, and confirmed on April 3, 1910. Nels attended two years of seminary at Dana College and then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for two more years. He also attended one year of seminary training at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and the last two years at Trinity Theologial seminary in Blair, NE. Nels and Metta married in Askov, MN on Sept. 27, 1922. Reverend F.C.M. Hansen, Nels' brother, performed the ceremony. Metta (Sorensen) Hansen lived in Minnesota for awhile before marrying Nels. |
