The bag is rectangular in orientation. There are two thin leather straps that attach to both sides on the top end, on either side of the handles. There is a metal lock mechanism attached near the handles, at the top center. The upper portion is missing. Provenance |
The suitcase belonged to Kristian Ostergaard and was used on his first trip to America. He came to Elk Horn from Denmark in 1882 (date uncertain) to teach at the new folk school in town. Ostergaard was a teacher and writer, and worked with Grand View College in Des Moines for a time. He later went back to Denmark and started a folk school there. He died in 1931. Ostergaard was the donor's grandfather. She received the suitcase from a cousin at the Ostergaard family reunion in 1982. |
