Description |
White pillowcase decorated with hemstitching and 4.5-inch wide crochet with a fluted edge. It is one of a matching set; its mate is 1987.053.002b. The center of the crochet features a row of hexagons made from circles. (Each hexagon consists of one circle centered among six circles.) The bottom edge of the crochet includes diamond shapes, which gives the crochet edge a fluted appearance. Centered within each diamond shape is a hexagon of seven circles. |

The matching pillowcases and bedspread (1987.053.001) were made in South Dakota by Mrs. Peter (Caroline) Junker Lund. Caroline was born in Denmark in 1851 and she immigrated at the age of 18 to Clay County, South Dakota. Caroline later married Peter Lund (born 1850), a Danish immigrant from Slesvig. They married on March 6, 1874 and had six children.Caroline died in 1927 and Peter died in 1938. Caroline's diary is at Grand View College. The donor is Caroline's and Peter's grandson. |
