This folk costume belonged to Danish immigrant Mathilde Rasmussen. It may be representative of the traditional clothing worn in Varde, Denmark. Mathilde was born in Varde, Denmark. She married at 20, but was widowed at 21 when her husband died from consumption. Mathilde immigrated to the U.S. circa 1904 or 1905. Mathilde settled primarily in Beverly, Massachusetts, working as a housekeeper for the ministers of St. John's Episcopal Church. Later in life, she moved in with Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Nagel. They had been her friends since her arrival in the U.S. Mathilde cared for donor Alan Nagel's family when Alan was a child. Mathilde was a life member of the Cove Improvement Society. She celebrated her 95th birthday in 1959. |
