Description |
An apron. The waist apron is made from white cotton. The material is gathered along the waistband. The bottom edge has a floral motif with flowers and leaves that is chain-stitched in red thread. There are two long ties at the waist, one on each side, with red chain-stitch eat each end. |

The apron was most likely made by the donor, Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen. The apron is listed on handwritten notes in the accession file with the comment, "Kinda easy but kinda nice too." The donor may be referring to the ease of constructing the apron. ------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY HISTORY NOTES: Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen. She was born in Audubon County, Iowa on 15 December 1888 and died on 27 October 1984 in the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira, Iowa; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-Day Adventist Church near Exira. |
