Provenance |
This shawl was made by the donor's mother, Danish immigrant Anna Bang Johnson. Anna carded the wool and spun it, and was able to weave it because she had access to a loom. This shawl had many uses over the years. Anna used it to wrap her children in it when they traveled by sleigh in the winter. It was also used as an extra covering on beds. Later, it was used to cover the car radiator in the days before antifreeze. The donor's mother had to mend it in a few places after a dog pulled it off the radiator. Anna Bang Johnson emigrated from Denmark with her sister, Mary Bang Christensen. Both of their brothers, Walter Bang and Chris Bang, lived near Lansford, North Dakota, for a period of time. Chris Bang lived with his sister Anna after Anna's husband, Harry, died at a young age. When Anna's three sons and daughter had grown, Chris returned to Denmark to run a store and a farm. Walter remained in the U.S. |
