Description |
A baby's or child's slip. The sleeveless slip is made from cotton with an entirely crocheted yoke or bodice. The crocheted design consists of four openwork diamonds on the bodice with additional diamonds on the straps. The hem is also crocheted with scallops. The material is gathered at the waist. |

There is no specific provenance information regarding the slip, but it most likely belonged to the donor, Edith Sprow. --------------------------------------------------- FAMILY HISTORY: Peter Hansen was born 12 August 1879 to Hans Hansen (1845-1919) and Kristen Nielsdatter (Nielsen) (1839-1882) in Grumstrup, Denmark. Peter, as he preferred to be called, worked on a farm from the age of 8 or 10. He took an exam to become a fireman in Denmark, and when he did received any results, he decided to immigrate to the United States at the age of 1919. When Peter's father sent word that Peter had passed his exam and offered to pay for Peter's return, Peter declined and remained in the U.S. He first worked as a railroad laborer, then moved to Superior, Wisconsin to work in a chair factory. Later, Peter sold coal.Peter became a citizen on 1 September 1906. Mette Marie (Christensen) Hansen was born 28 March 1891 in Skagen, Denmark, to Christen Christensen and Maren Sofie Hansen Ruth. Her father was a farmer and fisherman. Mette Marie's only sister, Jansine, had married a carpenter, Julius Jensen, and lived in Superior, Wisconsin. When Jansine brought her two daughters, Agnes and Margaret to Denmark for a visit, Jansine discovered she had tuberculosis. Jansine and her daughters remained in Denmark to rest. During this time, her daughters contracted polio. Jansine and her daughters convalesced in Denmark for about 18 months. Mette Marie was charged by her parents with taking her sister back to the U.S. and helping her. Mette Marie married Peter on 8 December 1916. They had four children. |
