Description |
Dark purple banner. Associated with, and perhaps even a part of costume (1997.001.001a-h). The proper front surface is all purple with large dark yellow embroidered design. Yarn embroidery reads "DBS / SEATTLE / No 155". Between the "No" and "155", are the three symbols of the Danish Brotherhood: the plumb-bob, skeleton key and anchor. The plumb-bob is above the crossed key and anchor. Below is an image of a handshake. The top and bottom edges each have 3 flutes with 5 small dark yellow tassels. On the proper front, each of the bottom flutes has a large letter "T". The proper back is almost all purple, except for the top fluted edge, which is bright red on the sides and white in the middle. The top fluted edge is meant to fold down over, so that the proper back (red and white surfaces) of the top fluted edge is visible. 3 metal hooks on proper back surface, spaced across where the fluted edge folds down. The Deed of Gift speculated that these hooks were for attaching to bodice 1997.001.001a. There is one thread eye on the proper front of each shoulder of the bodice; so it may be possible that the banner was designed to be worn like a cape. Gold-colored metal sequin-like disks along the bottom fluted edge and proper left and right sides of proper front surface. On the proper back surface, there are more gold-colored metal sequin-like disks, but only along the top fluted edge. |

Provenance |
This costume was found among the remaining objects of DBIA Lodge 155 after it disbanded. Donor was secretary of the lodge. She "inherited" the purple costume, and no one was ever able to tell her its origin or purpose. Judging from its size, it may have been worn by a child or young adult. According to donor, "DBS" probably stands for "Danske Brodersamfund" [Danish Brotherhood]. DBIA Lodge 155 was chartered on 7 November 1902 in Bellingham, Washington. |
