Description |
Danish coin. Round, flat with smooth outer edges. Dark brown in color. Side one has a crown at the top and a large "C" with an "IX" inside just below it. "1897" is at the outer edge to the left below the initials and initials (illegible) at the right. Side two is "1 / ØRE" and a dolphin at the left edge and a plant stalk at the right. |

This may have belonged to Jens P. Andersen, likely a relative of the donor's. Jens P. Andersen is on the museum's Wall of Honor. He was born May 17, 1893, in Gammel Sogn Ringkøbing, Denmark to Niels and Ane Margrethe Steiner Andersen. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1910. He married twice - first to Gretha Sorensen in 1917. Two days after their marriage, Jens left for WWI, and Gretha passed away, a victim of the flu epidemic, shortly after Jens returned home from the War. On December 10, 1919, Jens married Hilda Lorena Hansen, and they had five children. Andersen died March 7, 1970, in Harlan, IA, and is buried in Elk Horn, IA. He was a member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church from 1941 to 1970 and farmed west of Elk Horn, near Exira, for about 29 years. He also spent 14 years in Council Bluffs and retired in Elk Horn in 1959. At the time of his draft into WWI in June 1917, he was living in Marne and was a farm laborer. The Elk Horn-Kimballton Review announced in 1919 that Private Jens Andersen was at Camp Dodge and expected to be discharged soon. After returning, he became active in the American Legion. |
