Description |
Wooden storage box for a drafting set. The wood has been covered with a thick layer of an unidentifiable dark brown substance (thicker than paint), which is bubbling up and wearing off. Inside the box is lined with black felt. Grooved areas are cut into the felt so that pieces from the drafting set may be stored in the box without moving around. One side has a brass bar that keeps the square and ruler from falling out of their spots. The box is supposed to be secured with a hook latch, but the bottom piece is missing leaving only the top loop. This loop hits the other side not allowing the box to close completely. One brass nail is protruding from the right side of the box. |

A note associated with this object indicated that the tools from this drafting set belonged to Asmus Christian Vogt. They may have been made in 1882 by his father. Vogt's trade in Denmark was tool and die cutting. Almost all items in this accession relate to the donor's grandfather, Asmus Christian Vogt (Fogt, original Danish spelling--changed after immigrating). He was born in Nakskov, Denmark on Dec. 13, 1868. He immigrated to the U.S.--Omaha, NE--1892. He died in Evanston, IL on June 10, 1949. During his lifetime, Vogt practiced metalworking.
