Duus, Anne (née Hansen) Duus, Elisa S. bookmark Tyler Minnesota Denmark embroidery needlework floral flower rosebud |
Provenance |
One of three bookmarks (1987.044.002, 1987.044.003 and 1987.044.004) belonging to Danish immigrant Anne (née Hansen) Duus. The donor, Elisa Duus, was her daughter-in-law. Anne (née Hansen) Duus was born in Denmark in 1859. Her mother died at an unknown date, so she lived with her grandmother in Langeland. In 1872, at the age of 12, Anne emigrated from Denmark with a younger brother to join their father, who had lived in the U.S. for a few years. Anne lived in Ludington, Michigan for several years. She briefly moved to Iowa, where her uncle Bramholdt lived. While there, Pastor H. J. Pedersen asked her to move to Tyler, Minnesota to teach Danish in the parochial school. Anne moved to Tyler in 1893, where she met Hans Duus. They married in 1895 and had two sons, Hans Christian and Niels Peter. Anne died in 11 January 1920. |
