Stole worn during religious ceremonies. The center of the stole would be worn around the back of the neck, and the two ends would drape parallel to each other across the torso. Stole is made of shiny, silk-like fabric with weft threads of emerald green and warp threads of yellow-green. Fabric is woven to create a pattern of horizontal stripes. Yellow-green fringe on ends of stole. Stole is rectangluar; it does not narrow at any point. On the proper front, the warp threads are on top, creating broad (1.875 inches wide) yellow-green shiny stripes that alternate with narrow (0.875 inches wide) stripes of the emerald green. On the proper back, the stripes are reversed, and the yellow-green shiny stripes are narrow (0.875 inches wide) and alternate with broad (1.875 inches wide) stripes of emerald green. |

Provenance |
This stole belonged to the donor's father, Reverend H. P. K. Hansen. The donor believed this stole was worn during Pentecost. Hans Peter Kristian Hansen was born on the island Möen in Denmark on 25 December 1882. He became an orphan in early 1884. After living with several relatives in Denmark, he immigrated in 1896 at the age of 13 to live with his aunt and uncle, Laura and Chris Mortensen, on a farm near Callendar, Iowa. In 1901, H.P.K. Hansen went to Blair, Nebraska to continue his education and attended college and seminary. He was ordained in Racine, Wisconsin into ministry of the United Lutheran Evangelical Church on 5 June 1910. He served the Ebenezar Lutheran Congregation in Dane Valley, near Culbertson, Montana. He married Dora Katharine Nelsen on 10 July 1911 in McCabe, Montana. They had eight surviving children. Reverend H.P.K. Hansen served in Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska and Iowa. He died at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on 1 December 1967. The museum's collection contains many items associated with H.P.K. Hansen, including his baptism certificate (1998.085.004), confirmation certificate (1998.085.001), ordination certificate (1998.085.002), and an obituary, handwritten by H.P.K. Hansen, for his son Rudolph's memorial service (1998.085.005). The museum also has his black bear hide lap robe (1992.017.004). A photo postcard (1992.017.005) from H.P. K. Hansen to Chr. Henriksen documents the use of this lap robe in the family buggy in Dane Valley, Montana. |
