Provenance |
The decoration was made by the donor's aunt Laura Steffensen who always displayed it at Christmas time. Soren Johann Valdemar Steffensen (Sam) was born March 3, 1906 in Borglum, Hjorring, Jutland, Denmark to Marie (nee Larsen) Steffensen and Jens Christian Steffensen. The family departed Copenhagen on March 12, 1914 on the Oscar II, and arrived in New York on March 28. The family settled in Kimballton, Iowa. Sam was naturalized in 1930. By that time, the family had moved to Viola Township, in Audubon County, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from December 9, 1942 through September 3, 1945 at Shick General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa. On August 18, 1943, he married Laura Sofie Madsen at Oak Hill Church west of Exira. After WWII, Sam farmed with his brother Tony in Melville Township. In 1956, Sam and Laura became guardians of Laura's niece, aged 6. In 1967, the brothers retired and moved to Audubon. Sam passed away November 2, 1972, and is buried in St. John's Cemetery west of Exira. Laura, born Laura Madsen, lived from 1911 to 2006 in Audubon County, Iowa with the exception of two years spent in Clinton, Iowa during WWII. She is buried at St. John's Cemetery with Sam. |
