Provenance |
The tatted bootees were made by the donor's mother, Clara Marie Oleson Lund, in 1920. At this time, Clara Marie was living in Hampton, Iowa and expecting her first child. ---------------------------------------------------- Family History: The donor's maternal grandmother, Marie Katherine Jensen, was born in Denmark in 1861. The donor's paternal grandfather, Niels Olesen, was born in Galsted in 1863. As a young man, Niels had fled north of Limfjorden to avoid compulsory service in the German army. This is where Niels and Marie met. The couple married in Ydby, Denmark in 1885 and had two children in Denmark. They immigrated in 1888 and settled in Nebraska, where they had six more children (including the donor's mother, Clara Marie). Marie and Niels moved to Askov, Minnesota in 1912, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Marie died in 1940 and Niels died in 1941. The donor's father, Kresten Lauritsen Lund, was born in Denmark in 1893. At the age of twelve, Kresten immigrated alone to the United States to join his brothers in Hampton, Iowa. As a young man, Kresten and a friend purchased land in Askov, Minnesota, and Kresten went to work for his uncle. Kresten met his future wife, Clara Marie Olesen, through this uncle; the uncle was married to Clara Marie's eldest sister, Hansine Patrine Olesen. Clara Marie was born in 1897 in Nebraska to Danish immigrants Niels Olesen and Marie Katherine Jensen Olesen. Clara Marie married Kresten in 1919. Kresten died in 1969, and Clara Marie died in 1988. |
