Description |
48-star national flag of the United States of America. Proper right upper corner has the union in dark blue with 6 rows of 8 white stars. Stars are stitched on, not printed. Stars arranged in straight lines both horizontally and vertically. 7 red stripes alternating with 6 white stripes. Machine sewed. Made from red, white and blue wool. Off-white canvas header along the hoist. Three metal grommets (one at each end and one in the middle) in the canvas header. Faded stamp along the proper front of the header. The Deed of Gift states that it reads "STANDARD 4x 6", but the writing is really only legible when you have this information. On the proper back, near the bottom grommet, there is some illegible, faded handwriting. |

DBIA Danish Brotherhood in America West Palm Beach Lodge #321 Florida American flag flag United States Flag 48 star stars and stripes handwriting |
Provenance |
This U.S. flag was displayed with eagle emblem 1989.051.001a and flagpole 1989.051.001b. This flag was used by the Danish Brotherhood in America (DBIA) Lodge #321, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The 48-star United States of America flag was the official flag used between 4 July 1912 and 3 July 1959. However, the use and display of older versions of the flag, even after new flag designs had been adopted, was traditionally considered acceptable. In 1959, President Eisenhower issued a statement that the display of older flags was acceptable until the the older flags were no longer in good condition and until the stockpiles of older flag versions were used up. Therefore, this flag may have been used by Lodge #321 as early as its founding in 1922 and may have been used even after 1959. DBIA Lodge #321 was organized on 29 August 1922. The first minutes, recorded on that day, lists the following officers: Ex. President--Anders S. Andersen President--Hans Rasmussen Vice President--O.W. Eleasen Secretary--Bernard Jorgensen Treasurer--Theodore Hansen The lodge minutes were recorded in Danish from the lodge's founding until the 10 June 1961 meeting. From that date, all minutes were recorded in English. The Lodge's by-laws were updated over the years. As of 1989, the Lodge was meeting at the Senior Citizens Center in Lake Worth, Florida. At the time of donation, the Lodge officers were the following: President--Eva Stevens Vice President--Gladys Jorgensen Secretary-Treasurer--A. Clarence Andersen Trustees: Bertha Hilts, Isabel Larsen and A. Clarence Andersen |
