Description |
Cream to pale yellow linen tablecloth decorated with dark blue and light blue embroidery similar to the Royal Copenhagen Blue Fluted Half Lace pattern. The pattern includes a border with rectangular sections. In these sections, there is a flower in the center with small sprigs projecting off of it. This is surrounded by curving lines that have smaller lines branching off, ending in dark blue circles. There is one three-petaled shape toward the outside of the section. In the center of the tablecloth, there are small sprigs of blue with dark blue dots. Outer edges embellished with hemstitching and 3-inch-wide crocheted edging. |

This tablecloth was made by donor Olga Olsen and her sister, Vera Olsen. Olga Olsen and her sisters, Ruth and Vera, were long-time residents of Watertown, South Dakota. The father, Hans Olsen, was a Danish immigrant and their mother, Augusta Erikson, was a Swedish immigrant. Hans Olsen was born August 21, 1862 at Nestved, Denmark. He came to the U.S. in June 1880 at the age of 18. In 1899, Hans came to South Dakota and was involved with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for more than 50 years. He was the foreman for the local office. He retired from the railroad in 1932. Hans married Augusta Erikson at Ashland, Wisconsin, on April 8, 1892. Augusta Erikson was born in Falkenberg, Sweden on January 29, 1864. She came to the U.S. in 1888 at the age of 24 years. She died July 3, 1945. Donor Olga Olsen was born June 9, 1895, at Tracy, Minnesota. She graduated from high school at Watertown, South Dakota, and from a two-year advanced course at Mankato, Minnesota State University. She received a Bachelor of Science from Northern State College at Aberdeen and a Master of Science in education from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. She taught for 49 years, 46 of them in Cleveland, Ohio. She retired in 1965. Olga was a former member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church at Cleveland and the Altar Guild of Emmanuel Church; Northeastern Ohio Teacher's Association, Shaker Heights, Ohio; Republican Womens' Club; and a charter member of the American Association of University Women. She was, at the time of her death, a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Margaret's Guild. |
