Description |
Burner or controller for a gas lamp. The primary portion is black painted iron. The body is cylindrical with a door or flap that opens on one flat end. On that flap is raised lettering that reads "NEWBRIDGE / CONTROLLER / BATH / ENGLAND". Inside that flap is a dial, black and silver, that acts as the timer. The number "923" is found on the inside of that flap. The flap latches shut on the viewer's left and hinges on the right. Attached to the main body are a few valves, black and silver in color. One is attached to the viewer's left side and a thick silver wire extends out of it. Another is attached at the top and joints into another. Two openings are found on the up-turned portions. There is an opening at the bottom of the main body where something previously screwed on. |

Provenance |
Parts of a lamp, a complete lamp top (.001a), and two full lamps with posts (now installed along the front entry way of the Museum) were created in 1857 as gas lamps, and lit the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1959, the City of Copenhagen donated these three lamps to Dana College in Blair, Nebraska to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the school. They remained gas-powered until 1993 when they were electrified and re-erected in the plaza in front of the new building which replaced Old Main (the latter had earlier burned). The lamp top (.001a) was damaged and no longer attached to its post, but its history made it a good candidate for the artifact collection. In April 2017, the lamp top was mounted on a tall black post for installation in the newly redesigned core exhibit. A light was also inserted into the lamp. Following the closure of Dana College in June of 2010, the Museum negotiated the purchase of these lamps and completed the transaction on November 8, 2011. |
