Description |
A fatigue work hat issued by the U.S. Army. The hat is a light olive green color. The hat has a bill with a double-tiered rim and a series of stitched half circles as decoration. Attached to the bill is a circular band of fabric. The crown of the hat is made of a single piece of fabric with vertical pleats at regular intervals. On the inside of the hat there is a somewhat loose flap that attaches to the bottom of the band. On the underside of this flap near the bill is written "CLAUSEN" in silver ink. |

Provenance |
These materials belonged to the donor. Hans Jorgen Clausen emigrated from Vejstrup, Denmark to the U.S. in May of 1953, travelling by ship and then Greyhound bus to Great Falls, Montana. He was active service in the U.S. Army from July 1954 through June 1956, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany after doing basic training and aircraft mechanics training. Following his military service, Hans was a farm hand, and then a student at Grandview University (then College) in Des Moines, Iowa from 1956 to 1958. From there he attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obipo, California, studying BSME mechanical engineering. ____________ This object was featured in the exhibit "Denmark - America's Smallest and Biggest Ally" which ran from September 2017 to September 2018. |
