Provenance |
This pillow cover and pillow cover 1988.055.010 were made by donor Kristine Fries while she was living in Denmark in 1926. The donor, Kristine Fries, is the daughter of Chris Nielsen and Marie Andersen Nielsen. Chris and Marie were married in 1909 in Denmark. In December of 1911, Chris, Marie and their two young daughters (Kristine, age 2 and Elfrieda, age one month) emigrated from Brovst, Denmark to Battle Creek, Ida County, Iowa, where they had Danish friends. Chris and Marie farmed for eleven years in Ida County. During that time, the couple had two more children, sons Raymond and Arnold. In 1922, the family moved to Gates (no longer extant) in Audubon County, Iowa. By 1926, both Chris and Marie were homesick and the family sold the farm and returned to Denmark. However, within six months the family had returned to the United States, this time farming in Cass and Audubon counties in Iowa. Kristine married Elmer Fries and moved to a farm near Wiota, Iowa and had three children. In 1944, Kristine and Elmer moved to a farm south of Anita, Iowa. They retired in 1970, and Elmer passed away in November of 1982. Kristine has visited Denmark twice since the death of Elmer, once in 1983 with daughter Opal and once with her only American cousin, Signe Madsen, of Harlan, Iowa. |
