Provenance |
This feather tick cover was made by the donor's paternal grandmother. The donor's father, Jens Soe, brought it to the United States in 1883. The donor's mother, Marie Dorthea Thomsen Soe, took care of this feather tick cover and eventually passed it along to the donor. An identical feather tick cover was also given to the donor's brother, Peter. Jens Soe was from Holmsland, Ringkobing, Denmark. He was born in 1857, and came to the U.S. in 1883. He brought this feather tick cover, along with pillows and wool sheets. For a while, Jens shared a place with his brother, Mads Soe, five miles east of Kimballton, Iowa. Jens became a U.S. citizen on 11 September 1888. The museum has some of his naturalization papers in its collection (1986.113.005-.007). The donor's mother was Marie Dorthea Thomsen Soe. She also immigrated to the U.S. in 1883, at the age of 17. Before Marie immigrated, she made a wool dress in Denmark, which is in the museum's collection (1986.113.012a,b), along with a brooch (1986.113.013). Marie and Jens met after they immigrated and married (date unknown). The couple eventually settled in Audubon County, Iowa. The museum's collection contains a family photograph of Jens, Marie and their three children: Nels P., Otto and Gudrun (the donor) (1986.113.004). |
