Description |
"The Family", a bronze sculpture created by Dennis Smith. On the front of the sculpture is a man standing in the back with his right arm around a young girl (who is Kristina), and his left arm around a woman holding a baby. A young boy is standing to the right of the woman and baby. The grandmother of "Kristina" is behind the group and has her back to the rest of the family as though she is gazing back toward Denmark and symbolizes the image of ancestry and connectedness. In the sculpture, she is looking backward toward the past while the other members of the family group look to the future. These Danish people left native Jutland in 1866 to come to America. The piece stands on a square wooden base with a beveled top edge. On the front is a gold plaque that reads: "The Family" by Dennis Smith / Presented to the Danish Emigrant Museum / From Descendants and Friends of Denmark. Provo. Utah / Original placed in Rebild National Park / July 2000". On the bottom is brown felt with a gold sticker label attached near the center. It reads in black: "Adonis Bronze / Specialists in Fine Art Castings / 450 So. Alpine Hwy, Alpine, UT 84004 / (801) 763-9700". See notes and file for more information. |

Danish Immigrants Bronze Statue The Family Smith, Dennis Utah Rebild Mormon LDS Latter-Day Saints |
Provenance |
The statue is a replica of the larger original that is in Rebild National Park, Denmark. It was done by Dennis Smith of Alpine, Utah, a former Danish missionary and student at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. It was one of two life-sized statues given to Denmark--the other was titled "Kristina" and was placed in the America Harbor of Copenhagen. This piece celebrates the 150th anniversary (in 2000) of LDS Missionaries in Denmark and Morman immigration to Utah. Dennis Smith created 20-25 numbered bronze replicas of "The Family" and Number 11 was presented to the Museum in 2003. |
