Provenance |
This was likely used by the donor's father, Ferry Christiansen, a tailor. Ferry had a tailor shop in Copenhagen and was later a tailor in Des Moines, Iowa. ----------------------------------------- Family History: (Compiled from Dane-A-Log in paper file and information on Deed of Gift). Donor Kirsten Lundgren is the daughter of Ferry and Valborg Christiansen. Ferry was trained as a tailor in Denmark. (He was issued a certificate (1990.095.027) in 1928.) He operated his own shop in Copenhagen (see photograph 1990.095.034). Ferry and Valborg immigrated to Des Moines in 1955 to join Kirsten. Ferry became a leading tailor in Des Moines. Both Ferry and Valborg became active members of the Danish Brotherhood. Donor Kirsten Lundgren is a Danish immigrant. Kirsten graduated from a private girls' school in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1950 and went to work for a Copenhagen bank. During this time, she met an American soldier, Richard Ledet, in Tivoli. In 1953, Richard returned to Des Moines, Iowa, and Kirsten came to the U.S. and married him the following year. In 1955, Kirsten's brother Chris and and parents immigrated to Des Moines, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Kirsten worked at various automobile dealerships for many years before taking some classes at Grand View College in Des Moines. After a year she transferred to Iowa State University, where she earned her degree and teaching certificate in 1969. In her private life, Kirsten and her mother Valborg had joined the Danish Sisterhood in 1963 and later joined the Danish Brotherhood when women became eligible for membership. Kirsten served as president of Lodge #15 for several years. Kirsten divorced Richard Ledet in 1967 and met widower Ellis Lundgren in 1974. Kirsten and Ellis were married in 1975. Ellis Lundgren was of Swedish descent. His family name, Olson, had been changed to Lundgren when they immigrated. Ellis was born in 1915 on a farm near Ayrshire, Iowa. He farmed until 1941, when he was drafted to serve in the army at Fort Des Moines. Ellis later served in the 3rd Armored Division, which saw action at Omaha Beach and in central Germany. Ellis married his first wife Alice Opelt in 1949; they had three children. Alice died in 1974. After his marriage to Kirsten, Ellis joined the Danish Brotherhood and served as conductor in Lodge #15. |
