Description |
The blade of the shovel is metal and painted red. The shaft of the shovel is a bar of wood painted off-white. There is a D-type handle at the top of the shaft made with a cylindrical piece of wood between the ends of a U-shaped piece of metal. Imprinted text on the front of the shovel above the blade reads: "2 / HEAT / TREATED". Attached with nails along the shaft of the shovel are twelve curved metal plaques with imprinted text. From the top of the shovel, those plaques read: "COMPLETION OF / BORUP COLISEUM DIRT FLOOR AREA / FEBRUARY, 1981", "DANA COLLEGE / OFFICIAL CEREMONIAL / GROUNDBREAKING SHOVEL", "BUILDING SITES / NOVEMBER 1957", "MICKELSEN HALL / SEPTEMBER / 1959". "BORUP MEMORIAL / APRIL / 1961", "CHARLES A. This item is from the lot purchased by the Museum from Dana College. On July 9, 2010, following the closure of Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, staff members from the Museum went to Dana and retrieved a number of items from the campus and proceeded to provide temporary housing and safekeeping until this purchase was negotiated and completed on November 3, 2011. OBJECT SPECIFIC INFO: The shovel was used in the groundbreaking of several construction projects at Dana College during the 1950s and 60s. |
