Description |
White porcelain plate with 5/8" gold decorative edging around rim. Gold edging consists of an outer thin gold band, a 7/16" gold band with a repeating pattern of an etched bird in flight, butterfly, 2 flowers, swan, leaf, flower, bird perched on a flowering twig, and another thin gold band on inner side. Center of plate has a thin gold band surrounding depicted picture. The picture reflects Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier". Features in the picture include a toy white castle in the background, a ballerina, a swan, a toy soldier, and a jack-in-the-box clown. Back of plate bears the Royal Copenhagen of Denmark trademark stamp, gold numbered 9628, gold initialed "px" and printed words, "Private Commission / The Hans Christian Andersen Plates / The Steadfast Tin Soldier / (C)1975 Pauline Ellison." Note: The plate is accompanied by an acrylic holder which is not being accessioned. The acrylic holder consists of two pieces: small piece measures 3 1/2" x 1/2" and has 2 cut-outs along top edge and is used as a stablizer; large piece measures 7 3/4" x 6 7/8" when extended flat, center of large piece has a pin spine enabling piece to fold in half. |

The plate was purchased by the donor in 1979 from the Viking Shop. Donor intended to break up the set and give them to their nieces and nephews but they did not want them. Ingeborg Hilske (donor) is the child of August Hilske, Danish/Finnish and Maria Dierks, Dutch/German. |
