Description |
Black leather holder for an Honorable Discharge belonging to Andrew Henry Patterson (see .002). When opened, rectangular in shape. Edges are sewn. Holder is intended to fold three times along the short distance or horizontally. On the exterior of one end portion is imprinted "Compliments of / FRED L. CHAMBERS / Wellsburg, W. Va." and on the opposite end is an eagle inside a circlular design with "U.S. ARMY" above and "HONORABLE DISCHARGE" below. Inside, the long edges are opened to insert the paper document inside. |

This holder originally contained the Honorable Discharge certificate for Andrew Henry Patterson (see .002). The Andrew Patterson of the citizenship certificate is the father of the Andrew Henry Patterson of the honorable discharge (see .001 for the former and .002 for the latter). The donor is the grandson of Andrew Henry. Rich also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, though was not deployed to Vietnam. He was discharged in 1970. FAMILY INFO: Andrew (the father) was born Nov. 13, 1861 in Norre Vedby, Denmark to parents Peder Nicolaisen (b. ca. 1810, d. Nov. 16, 1874) and Maren Kirstine Rasmusdatter (b. March 8, 1823, d. Feb. 13, 1906). He immigrated to the U.S. in 1876 and became a U.S. citizen in 1892. On Oct. 22, 1893, he married Katarina Detjen (b. April 29, 1873 in Germany, imm. 1888, d. April 7, 1943) in Jersey City, NJ. She had emigrated from Elsdorf, Germany and the two met in the U.S. Andrew and Katharina had four children: Andrew Henry, Andrew, Walter Edward, and Rene Edwin. He died January 31, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a sea farer and joined the U.S. Merchant Marine and sailed for his career. During the First World War, Andrew was captain of the U.S. Navy freighter "Englewood." He retired as a Lt. Commander. Andrew's son Andrew Henry married Leona Wellenkamp and they had two sons: Henry D. and Albert. Henry D. later married Clair Zieger and they had two sons: Richard A. (the donor) and Thomas E. Richard later married Marion Fellows, and they have two children: son Daniel Henry and daughter Nancy Elizabeth.
