Provenance |
This pillow cover was made for, and given to, the donor's maternal aunt, Jennie Nelson, in the 1890s in Lincoln, Nebraska. Friends, neighbors and family of Jennie Nelson autographed the cloth, and later the signatures were embroidered. It was never made into a full pillow cover. This pillow cover passed from Jennie to her daughter, Mrs. James (Elva) Buick, of Omaha, Nebraska. Elva in turn gave it to her cousin, donor Reverend Edward A. Hansen. Jennie Nelson served as the organist for Our Savior's (Danish) Lutheran Church in Lincoln. The following people autographed the cloth: Martine Nielsen, Jennie's mother. Her full name was Marie Martine Nielsen. Anna Camille Nelson, Jennie's sister. This was the donor Rev. Edward A. Hansen's mother. Albert Hansen, donor Rev. Edward A. Hansen's father. Albert married Anna Camille Nelson in 1900. Cora Nelson, Jennie's sister, who married Andrew Carr of Staplehurst in 1910. Mary Hansen, a cousin from Davey, Nebraska. S. (Sigurd) Anker and Ingeborg Anker were the children of of Rev. and Mrs. Kr. Anker. Kr. Anker served as pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church for some years. (Ingeborg Anker later married Rev. A. Th. Schultz). Two sisters, Minnie Stark and Nellie Stark, are from Galesburg, Illinois, where Jennie's family lived at one time. They may have been paying a visit to their Lincoln friends. The remaining signatures were from neighbors and friends living in Lincoln: Carrie Nielsen Lou E. Shaffer Bert Madsen Godfrey Christensen Millie Nelson Marie C. Johnson Mrs. Olivia Johnson Fred K. Nielsen Anna Petersen (possibly the wife of Sam Peterson, a Lincoln tailor) W. O. Dickabob "Saints Rest C.H.N." "The Kid" |
